Hulk Hogan awarded a total of £97.5 million over sex tape leak
Well we suppose it has to be better than working when you receive a payday of £80million and then you are handed another £17.5million in punitive damages against a British owned website that published a sex tape of the star. The wrestling legend originally sued the company for £70million, but the jury clearly thought that he should be awarded more, and more he got.
The 62 year old wrestler, whose real name is Terry Bollea, took action against Gawker after they had posted a tape which, in a secretly recorded video, it showed him having sex with his then best friend’s wife and he duly sued over the invasion of his privacy.
The court sat in St Petersburg, Florida and the jury which consisted of four women and two men, had to determine how much the firm which is based in New York, along with British owner and Oxford educated Nick Denton and former editor-in-chief A.J. Daulerio, would have to pay Hogan in damages. The company was made liable for £10.5million, Denton the owner, a former Financial Times journalist was to be liable for £7million and former editor Daulerio £69,600.
This additional payment is over and above the compensation and is designed to punish defendants. During the hearing Hogan was seen dressed all in black including a black bandana, not un-naturally he smiled at his defence team when the award was announced.
The video was apparently filmed by radio shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge Clem, the former husband of his now ex-wife Heather Cole, and showed her having sex with Hogan. During the trial which lasted two weeks, Hogan said during his testifying that the video had caused him lasting humiliation. The defendants have indicated that they will appeal, but the likely outcome for Gawker and its sister titles is that they will be closed down.
